The South Course at Woodmont Country Club

The South Course is Woodmont Country Club’s second 18-hole championship golf course in Rockville, Maryland. In the early 1950s, our golf courses included the “Iron Duke,” a challenging 9-hole and par-3 course with holes ranging from 120 to 230 yards. In August of 1957, a fourth 9-hole course opened. The “Iron Duke” was eventually converted into a regulation 9-hole course and was combined with the other 9-holes on Labor Day of 1961, becoming the South Course that we enjoy today.

South Course Scorecard

Hole 1

HoLE play

A dogleg right with trees down right side. An uphill second shot with one bunker guarding left side of green.

Tee shot should be played at the bunker down the left center of the fairway. This will give you an approach with a mid-iron. Long hitters can try to cut the corner and leave themselves a short wedge into the green. If you miss the green, miss it slightly right.

Hole 2

HoLE play

Elevated tee, dogleg right. Bunkers guard the fairway both left and right. Long hitters beware; both left and right bunkers come into play. Accuracy is more important than distance. Play the hole conservatively. Place your tee shot at the 150 marker and leave yourself with a mid-iron to the green. A good hole for birdie. A well placed tee shot allows a mid-iron to a flat surface green for a fairly easy putt for a birdie.

Hole 3

HoLE play

This short par 5 favors a slight left side of the fairway drive due to the bunker on the right side of the fairway. There is also a bunker left of the fairway so depending how far you hit it, it may be smarter to lay up. For longer hitters, you can go for this back to front sloping green in two but there can be risks if you hit short right or left into the traps. If you do not go for the green, be mindful of the lake left of the fairway on your lay up. Hole 4

HoLE play

This is a great short par 3. The shot plays about 10 yards less than the yardage. A pond is waiting for any shot short as well as a subtle false front that will punish any shot with too much spin.Long is no good either as there is a sharp drop off that creates a difficult up and down. - Joe Scheffres, Fourteen Time Men's Club Champion

Hole 5

HoLE play

A tough par 4 because of the uphill tee and a second shot to a green with bunkers left and right. Trees guard closely to tight side of fairway.
Drive ball down left center. This will leave you a more open shot to green.

Hole 6

HoLE play

Short par 4 but tee shot is most important. Fairway bottlenecks at 130 yards from green with a bunker on left side at approximately 125 yards from green. The hole doglegs right to an undulating green.

Tee shot must be down left side of fairway. A mid to short iron to this green will give you a chance to birdie. Do not try to be too aggressive as green slopes quite a few ways. Center of green is the way to go!

Hole 7

HoLE play

A short par 5 that is reachable in two. Drive is tough with bunkers on left with a cross bunker approximately 75 yards from the green. Green is well bunkered which makes for a tough second shot into this green.

Tee shot must be centered on right side of fairway. Long hitters try to carry the bunker on the left. If you don’t think you can make the green in two, lay up to 100 yards from the green to allow an easy short iron in.

Hole 8

HoLE play

Short par 3 guarded by deep bunkers on three sides. Trees overhang on the right side of green.

Use short to mid-iron to the middle of the green. From there it is an easy two putt.

Hole 9

HoLE play

Uphill drive with dogleg to the right. Trees guard right side of fairway. Second shot must avoid two bunkers that guard the green.

Tee shot should be played left of center, using a mid to short iron. Hit it long down the middle.

Hole 10

HoLE play

Slight dogleg right. Green is sloped severely back to front and is guarded by three large bunkers.

Aim down the left side of fairway, as fairway slopes left to right. Second shot is deceiving; make sure you take enough club. Keep the ball below the hole to give yourself the best birdie opportunity.

Hole 11

HoLE play

There is so much turbulence in this putting surface you must account for it on on your approach shot. Pins on the right side of the green approach is into the left third of the green. Pins center to back in this green - similar idea and let the green contour feed it to center. - Moe Dweck, Chair of the Keepers

Hole 12

HoLE play

Short downhill par 3 with water in front. Bunkers guard front and right parts of green. Mounds guard the back.

Tee shot plays shorter because it is downhill. Picking the right club is crucial. If you are over, you have a tough chip from mounds to a green that run away and if you are short you will find water.

Hole 13

HoLE play

Toughest hole on course. Very long dogleg left with fairway sloping right. Tough to keep drive in fairway.

Very long second shot into a large green that is guarded by two bunkers.Hit a hard draw that hugs the left hand tree line.

This will leave you with a wood or long iron. Play to middle of green. Par is a great score on this hole.

Hole 14

HoLE play

The easiest par 4 in the back 9 favors a fade off the tee. A good tee shot should set you up with a wedge to a green that slopes back to front. This hole should offer a good chance to birdie. - Joe Scheffres, Fourteen Time Men's Club Champion

Hole 15

HoLE play

Short par 3 with mounds on right, bunker in back and water guarding front and left sides. A ridge bisects the middle of the green, hit a middle iron to same side of green as the pin.

Hole 16

HoLE play

Short par 5 with trees on right and left. Water guards the front of this green along with bunkers on the right and left.

Hit a drive between the trees and take enough club to carry the water in the front. This will lead to a good birdie opportunity.

Hole 17

HoLE play

Straight uphill par 4 with bunkers on the right and left hand side of the fairway. The green is sloped severely from front to back. Bunkers guard the front and right hand portions of the green. Hit a drive in between the bunkers, this leaves you with a short iron into the green. Leave your iron shot below the hole to have the best opportunity at birdie.

Hole 18

HoLE play

The South's intimidating finisher and a 3 shot hole to be sure. After you place your tee shot safely between bunkers on to the wide fairway you are still left with what feels at this point in your round like a long par 4 to play. a large fairway bunker on the left side of the fairway in the landing area for your second shot can swallow up an errant ball and leave a long approach from sand that will all but eliminate par. While there are some tricky areas around the green, chip shots are fairly manageable. Make a par on this monster and you've ended your round strong! - Mark Miller, Club Historian
